Falling in Love with French Furniture: Why Timeless Design Still Belongs in the Modern Home
Share
What makes French furniture so distinctive?
French furniture is not defined by one particular look.
Some designs are wonderfully decorative, with deep carving, sweeping curves and statement proportions. Others are much simpler, allowing the natural timber, shape and craftsmanship to become the focus.
This variety is one of the reasons we continue to be inspired by it.
A heavily carved French bed can become the centrepiece of an otherwise contemporary bedroom, while a simpler French console table can introduce character without dominating a modern interior.
Across the different styles, there are certain details that continually draw us back:
- Beautifully considered proportions
- Curved and shaped furniture frames
- Carved timber detailing
- Elegant legs and profiles
- Natural rattan and upholstered panels
- Painted, natural and antique-inspired finishes
- Furniture designed to have presence without relying on passing trends
It is the combination of these details that gives French furniture its unmistakable character.
From traditional French design to the Maison Haven home
One of the things we enjoy most about French furniture is seeing how differently the same design can be interpreted.
A carved bed finished in Antique White can create a completely different bedroom from the same style produced in a natural timber finish. Change an upholstered headboard from linen to velvet and the character changes again.
This is something that has become an important part of Maison Haven.
Many of our French furniture designs are handmade, and with selected pieces we are able to work directly with the craftsmen producing them. This allows us to offer different finishes, fabrics and, on certain special orders, adjustments to dimensions or configurations.
We don't believe a love of traditional furniture means your home needs to look traditional.
Quite the opposite.
Some of our favourite interiors combine an ornate French bed with simple bedding, contemporary lighting and warm neutral walls. A carved console can sit beneath modern artwork. A traditional French dining table can become the centre of an otherwise relaxed, contemporary dining room.
The contrast is often what makes the furniture stand out.
The French bed: where a bedroom begins
If there is one piece that demonstrates the appeal of French furniture particularly well, it is the French bed.
The bed naturally occupies the largest visual space in most bedrooms, so its design has an enormous influence on how the whole room feels.
A beautifully shaped or carved bed needs very little around it.
Our more decorative designs, including our Rococo Heavily Carved French Bed, are intended to become the focal point of the room. Other French beds use natural rattan, upholstery or simpler timber detailing to create a softer look.
This is also why we prefer to think about a bedroom as a complete setting rather than simply matching every piece of furniture.
A statement French bed can work beautifully alongside understated bedside tables, a simple chest of drawers and contemporary accessories. The furniture should complement the room rather than make it feel like a furniture showroom.
French bedroom furniture beyond the bed
The same approach applies to French bedroom furniture.
Wardrobes, bedside tables, dressing tables and chests of drawers give you an opportunity to repeat certain details from the bed without necessarily choosing an identical matching set.
You might repeat the timber finish, the shape of the legs, a brass handle or a subtle carved detail.
This creates a room that feels considered rather than overly coordinated.
For customers who do prefer a complete collection, many of our ranges are designed to work together, allowing a consistent finish and style throughout the bedroom.
There is no single correct approach. The important thing is creating a room that feels right for the person living in it.
French furniture for dining and living spaces
French design extends far beyond the bedroom.
A French dining table can completely transform a dining space, particularly when the craftsmanship of the base, legs or timber is allowed to remain visible.
We particularly like dining rooms that feel elegant without becoming too formal. Natural textures, comfortable upholstered chairs and simple accessories allow a beautiful table to remain the centre of the room while still making the space somewhere you actually want to use every day.
The same principle works with French sideboards, display cabinets and bookcases.
These are practical pieces of furniture, but that does not mean they need to disappear into the background.
A well-proportioned French sideboard ,provides useful storage while also giving you a surface for artwork, lighting and objects that make the room personal.
And in a hallway, a French console table can make even a relatively small space feel considered. Sometimes one distinctive piece is enough.
Traditional craftsmanship in a changing furniture world
Furniture has changed enormously.
Modern manufacturing has made it possible to produce furniture faster, flatter and in greater quantities. There is certainly a place for that, but it is very different from the furniture that originally made us passionate about this industry.
With many of our handmade ranges, you can still see the evidence of the people who made them.
Carved details are not always absolutely identical from one piece to another. Timber has its own natural characteristics. Hand-applied finishes can have subtle variations.
We don't see those things as something that needs to be hidden. They are part of the character of handmade furniture.
For us, that connection between design, material and craftsmanship is one of the reasons traditional French furniture remains relevant even as interior trends continue to change.
Making French furniture work in a modern home
One of the misconceptions surrounding French furniture is that you need a period property to make it work.
You don't.
In fact, some of the most successful rooms we see are modern interiors where one or two traditional pieces provide contrast.
If you are introducing French furniture into a contemporary home, we usually favour a simple approach:
- Choose the piece you genuinely love first.
- Allow a statement item, such as a French bed or wardrobe, to be the hero of the room.
- Keep surrounding colours relatively calm if the furniture is highly detailed.
- Mix traditional furniture with contemporary lighting and artwork.
- Use natural materials such as linen, wool, timber and stone to create warmth.
- Don't feel that every piece needs to belong to the same collection.
A home should feel collected and personal, not as though everything was chosen from one photograph.
Choosing the right finish
The finish can be just as important as the furniture itself.
Antique White creates a softer, lighter interpretation of traditional French furniture. Natural timber brings warmth and allows the material itself to become more prominent. Deeper timber tones can create a richer and more dramatic interior, while antique gold can completely transform an intricately carved design.
Fabric has the same effect.
Linen tends to create a relaxed appearance, while velvet can make an upholstered French bed or chair feel richer and more luxurious.
Where samples are available, we always recommend seeing them in your own home. Natural and artificial light can change the appearance of both timber finishes and fabrics considerably.

Furniture that feels personal
Perhaps this is ultimately what keeps us interested in French furniture.
It doesn't have to look perfect, uniform or dictated by whatever happens to be fashionable that year.
It can be grand or understated. Painted or natural. Heavily carved or beautifully simple. It can furnish an entire room or appear as one unexpected piece in an otherwise contemporary home.
For us at Maison Haven, the aim has never simply been to sell furniture that looks French.
It is to find and create pieces with enough character that people genuinely want to build a room around them.
Because when you find the right bed, dining table, wardrobe or console, you rarely need to ask what style it belongs to.
You simply know that you want it in your home.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is French furniture?
French furniture covers a wide variety of designs inspired by different periods and regions of French furniture making. Today, the term can include everything from elaborate carved furniture and French beds to simpler country-inspired timber pieces and contemporary interpretations of traditional designs.
Can French furniture work in a modern home?
Absolutely. Traditional French furniture can provide an effective contrast to contemporary interiors. A statement bed, console table, sideboard or wardrobe can introduce shape and character while the rest of the room remains relatively simple.
Do French furniture pieces all need to match?
No. Matching collections can create a beautifully coordinated room, but mixing pieces can create a more individual interior. Repeating a finish, material or smaller design detail is often enough to connect different pieces.
What should I consider when buying a French bed?
Consider the overall dimensions as well as the mattress size, particularly with beds featuring substantial headboards and footboards. Think about the finish, upholstery and how decorative you want the bed to be in relation to the rest of the room.
Can French furniture be customised?
This depends on the particular design and how it is manufactured. At Maison Haven, selected handmade pieces can be produced with different finishes, fabrics and, in some cases, customised dimensions or configurations. We recommend contacting us before ordering if you have a particular requirement.
