Elevating Your Entrance with a French Console Table
Share
The entrance to your home says something before the rest of the house has even been seen.
It may be a large hallway with high ceilings and plenty of natural light, or simply a quiet space between the front door and the rooms beyond. Either way, it is an opportunity to introduce the character of your home from the moment you step inside.
For us, few pieces do this as beautifully as a French console table.
Elegant without needing to dominate the room, a console can bring shape, craftsmanship and presence to an entrance while still remaining practical. From intricately carved statement pieces to simpler solid wood designs, it is also one of the easiest ways to introduce French furniture into a home without redesigning an entire room.
At Maison Haven, we particularly love a console because it can completely change an otherwise overlooked space.
More Than Somewhere to Leave the Keys
A console table is a relatively simple piece of furniture, but the right one can become the focal point of an entrance.
This is particularly true with French console tables, where the interest often comes from the furniture itself.
Carved aprons, shaped legs, natural timber, antique-inspired finishes and carefully considered proportions mean that the table doesn't need to be hidden beneath accessories to make an impression.
In fact, we often think the opposite works better.
When the furniture has enough character of its own, give it room to be seen.
A beautiful mirror, a pair of lamps or one carefully chosen decorative piece may be all it needs.
Finding the French Style That Feels Like You
One of the things we love about French furniture is just how varied it can be.
For some people, French design means elaborate carving and sweeping curves. These are the pieces that immediately command attention and can transform a hallway into something much more dramatic.
For others, it is the quieter side of French furniture that appeals: warm timber, elegant proportions, restrained detailing and a design that feels established without being overly decorative.
Neither approach is more authentically French than the other.
Our own collections move between these different interpretations, from heavily carved statement consoles to more relaxed French country furniture and cleaner designs that work particularly well in contemporary interiors.
The important part is choosing something that feels at home in your interior.
Let the Console Be the Hero
We use the idea of a "hero piece" quite often at Maison Haven.
It simply means choosing one piece of furniture strong enough to establish the character of a room and allowing everything around it to support rather than compete with it.
A French console table is perfect for this.
If you choose an intricately carved console, consider placing it against a relatively simple wall. A large mirror above it can reflect the detail and bring additional light into the entrance without distracting from the furniture.
If your console has a beautiful natural timber finish, let some of that surface remain visible rather than covering it completely with accessories.
And if the design is more understated, this gives you greater freedom to introduce artwork, lighting and decorative objects around it.
The furniture and the room should work together.
French Furniture Doesn't Require a Traditional Home
There is sometimes an assumption that French furniture belongs only in period properties.
We don't see it that way at all.
Some of our favourite combinations place traditional furniture in otherwise contemporary spaces.
The contrast between a carved French console table and modern artwork can be incredibly effective. The same applies to pairing an antique-inspired finish with simple architectural lighting, or placing a traditional timber console against a warm neutral wall with a large contemporary mirror.
You don't need ornate wallpaper, elaborate panelling and matching French furniture throughout the house.
Sometimes one exceptional piece is far more effective.
This is particularly useful in an entrance, where there may not be enough room for several pieces of furniture anyway.
Choosing the Right Console for Your Hallway
Before falling completely in love with a design, there is one practical consideration that matters more than almost anything else: proportion.
Hallways and entrances vary enormously, so rather than following a universal rule about what size a console "should" be, we recommend measuring your own space carefully.
Consider the overall width and depth of the table, the position of doors and radiators, and how much comfortable walking space will remain around it.
In a narrower hallway, a shallower console can introduce the look you want without making the entrance feel crowded.
If you have a larger entrance, you have much more freedom. A substantial carved console can occupy a larger wall and become a genuine statement piece rather than simply an occasional table.
We always recommend checking the individual product dimensions before ordering, particularly with handmade and heavily carved furniture where the widest point may be part of the decorative design rather than the tabletop itself.
Styling a French Console Table
There are no rules that say a French console needs to be styled traditionally.
If anything, we prefer not to prescribe a formula.
Your entrance should feel connected to the rest of your home.
A large mirror is a natural partner for a console and can be particularly effective in an entrance where natural light is limited. Artwork creates a completely different effect and can make traditional furniture feel considerably more contemporary.
Lighting can add warmth, while a vase or sculptural object can introduce height without overwhelming the furniture.
But don't feel every centimetre needs to be occupied.
One of the easiest mistakes to make with an intricately detailed console is to cover the very craftsmanship that made you choose it.
If the table is beautiful, allow some of it to simply be beautiful.
Painted, Natural or Something More Dramatic?
The finish has an enormous influence on how a piece of French furniture feels within a room.
A lighter painted finish can soften an elaborate design and works beautifully in bright, neutral interiors.
Natural and warmer timber finishes place more emphasis on the material and can bring depth to rooms dominated by pale colours.
Darker finishes can make a traditional design feel surprisingly contemporary, particularly when paired with simple walls and modern lighting.
And then there are more decorative finishes, including antique-inspired golds, which can turn a console into a true statement piece.
This is why we always encourage customers to look beyond the shape of the furniture itself. The same style interpreted in a different finish can create a completely different room.
Handmade Character
With many of the handmade pieces we offer at Maison Haven, part of their appeal is that they haven't simply come from an anonymous production line.
Carved details, timber characteristics and hand-applied finishes can naturally have subtle variations from one piece to another.
For us, that is part of what makes this type of furniture interesting.
It gives the piece character and allows the craftsmanship to remain visible rather than trying to make every surface appear mechanically identical.
Where selected designs are produced through our own manufacturing, we can also sometimes offer different finishes or discuss special requirements with our customers.
That relationship with the furniture is important to us. We don't simply want to find something that fills an empty wall; we want to help customers find the piece they were hoping to put there.
From Entrance Hall to Living Room
Despite the name, a console table doesn't have to live in the hallway.
A French console table can work beautifully behind a sofa, beneath artwork in a living room, between windows, in a dining room or even as an occasional writing or display surface depending on the design.
This versatility is particularly useful when investing in a distinctive piece of furniture.
As your home changes, the furniture can move with it.
A console bought for an entrance today may eventually find its place in a dining room or living space where it takes on a completely different role.
Creating an Entrance That Feels Like Home
Perhaps the most important thing is not to style an entrance simply because there is a particular way it is supposed to look.
The homes we find most interesting are rarely the ones where everything follows the same formula.
They combine old and new, simple and decorative, practical pieces and completely unnecessary beautiful things.
French furniture lends itself wonderfully to that approach.
A console table can be the first introduction to it: one beautifully proportioned piece that gives an otherwise functional part of the house its own identity.
And sometimes that is all an entrance needs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can a French console table work in a modern home?
Yes. Traditional French furniture can work particularly well in contemporary interiors because of the contrast it creates. Pairing a decorative console with simple walls, modern artwork or understated lighting allows the furniture to become the focal point without making the room feel overly traditional.
What size console table should I choose for a hallway?
There isn't one ideal size because hallways differ considerably. Measure the width and depth available, check door openings and consider how comfortably you can move through the space. Always use the individual product dimensions rather than relying on a general sizing rule.
What should I put above a French console table?
Mirrors and artwork are both excellent choices. A mirror can introduce light and create a feeling of space, while contemporary artwork can create an interesting contrast with traditional French furniture.
Do I need matching French furniture?
Not at all. A French console can work as a standalone statement piece. Mixing traditional and contemporary furniture can often make an interior feel more personal than using a completely matching collection.
Are Maison Haven French console tables handmade?
This varies by collection. Many of our French furniture designs are handmade, while others are sourced from specialist furniture suppliers. Product information will provide details for individual pieces, and our team can help if you would like to know more about a particular design.
